Neurodivergent and Seen: What Therapy Can Really Look Like

Do you ever feel like therapy wasn’t made with your neurodivergent brain in mind? You’re not alone. Many neurodivergent adults share this experience, and it can be incredibly frustrating! You might have tried different approaches, gone through standard CBT programs, or sat in sessions that felt more focused on fitting you into a “typical” framework than actually understanding you.
One story I hear often is:
“I tried CBT through the NHS, but it never really fit. I didn’t feel truly understood, and it felt like nothing worked for me.”
For many neurodivergent people, traditional therapy can feel like trying to force a square peg into a round hole. That doesn’t mean therapy can’t work, it just means the approach needs to be tailored to you! You deserve support that meets you where you are and honors your neurodivergence, rather than expecting you to adapt to a neurotypical standard.
So, what would therapy with me look like?
My approach is neurodivergent-affirming, which means that every aspect of therapy is adapted to be relevant, safe, and effective for you. Here’s what that can look like in practice:
A therapist who truly understands. Understanding neurodivergence isn’t just theoretical. Through both lived experience and years of working with neurodivergent clients, I focus on truly seeing and validating your unique perspective. I may not have lived every circumstance, but I am here to understand yours.
A space to be fully yourself. Many neurodivergent adults spend their lives masking, explaining, or shrinking themselves to fit in. Therapy can be one of the few spaces where you don’t have to do that- a place where your differences are honored, and your voice is heard without judgment.
Flexible and accommodating sessions. Neurodivergent brains don’t always follow the same rhythms as neurotypical expectations. I adapt sessions to your pace, energy, and preferred ways of communicating, so therapy feels accessible and sustainable.
Collaborative and empowering. Therapy isn’t about me telling you what to do- it’s about working together. You set the focus, and your needs shape the process. This helps you build confidence in understanding your own mind, making choices that feel right, and creating strategies that work for you long-term.
What We Might Explore in Therapy
Every client’s journey is unique, but some common themes often come up when working with neurodivergent adults:
Unmasking and reconnecting with your authentic self. Learning to drop the masks you’ve developed and rediscover your natural ways of thinking, feeling, and being.
Processing trauma. Many neurodivergent individuals have experienced environments that didn’t understand or accommodate their needs. Exploring these experiences can help you release shame, guilt, or self-blame.
Building self-esteem. Exploring negative self-beliefs that may have developed over years of feeling “different”, “difficult", or "too much".
Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD). Navigating and managing RSD.
Understanding your sensory profile. Learning how your body and brain respond to sensory input, and creating strategies to protect your wellbeing.
Managing emotional dysregulation and meltdowns. Developing tools to navigate overwhelming emotions safely and compassionately.
Self-accommodation and advocacy.
